Breaking the vicious loop of recycling plastic, we designed an interlocking brick-cum-tile from plastic waste generated by the entire city of Mumbai, using an open-source process. We aimed to impact the local slum, Dharavi, dealing with all this waste by creating jobs, a new cottage industry and valuable end products to improve their housing infrastructure. We showcased opportunity and viability of recycled plastic products that are durable, can be built from a grassroots level, and can sustain meaningful purpose in their application.
